چکیده

Nonspecific surface binding of small protein molecules presents a major obstacle to surface biosensing techniques attempting to detect very low concentrations ( 1 pg/mm) of large biological objects such as cells and bacteria. A new method for selective desensitization of a polarimetric waveguide interferometer eliminates the background noise from nonspecific surface binding. We demonstrate the ability to tune the phase sensitivity of a waveguide interferometer as a function of the distance of the biological or chemical analyte from the waveguide surface. This makes possible a sensor that has zero sensitivity at a particular distance where nonspecific surface binding occurs without significantly reducing the sensitivity to target larger biological species.

Simple polarimetric approach to direct measurement of the near-surface refractive index in graded-index films.

In the standard M-line method for the characterization of graded-index film, an analytical curve is fitted to the waveguide mode measurements and extrapolated to provide the refractive index in the zero-depth limit. Here we review our polarimetric approach to a direct near-surface measurement, which complements the M-line method. Also, we present its new and more straightforward version, which ...

Determination of surface protein coverage by composite waveguide based polarimetric interferometry.

Deposition of a tapered thin film of Ta(2)O(5) onto a single-mode, polarization-insensitive slab glass waveguide enables the resultant structure to serve as a simple, inexpensive yet highly sensitive polarimetric interferometer for trace, even ultra-trace, detection of chemical and biochemical analytes. By comparing the measured refractive-index sensitivity with that simulated based on a four-l...

Laser-written nanoporous silicon ridge waveguide for highly sensitive optical sensors.

We report that low-loss ridge waveguides are directly written on nanoporous silicon layers by using an argon-ion laser at 514 nm up to 100 mW. Optical characterization of the waveguides indicates light propagation loss lower than 0.5 dB/cm at 1550 nm after oxidation. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer sensor is experimentally demonstrated using the waveguide in its sensing branch, and analytical res...

Electric-field-driven nano-oxidation trimming of silicon microrings and interferometers.

Nanoscale disorder results in severe spectral misalignment of silicon microring resonators and Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We correct for such effects using electric-field-induced waveguide nano-oxidation, demonstrating a tuning wavelength range of several nanometers and 0.002 nm resolution without line shape degradation. Field-induced nano-oxidation is a permanent and precise technique and r...
